World Pulses Day 2026

On this World Pulses Day, let’s celebrate these nutritious sources of protein and fiber by learning how pulses are powering better lives in Kyrgyzstan.

The EBRD and FAO are driving a quiet agricultural transformation in the country by supporting an agribusiness client that sources pulses from small-scale farmers. Through this initiative, the two organizations are helping expand bean, chickpea and lentil production into regions long dominated by wheat, offering farmers new income opportunities and more resilient cropping systems.

With improved drought‑tolerant seeds, training and guaranteed purchase contracts, producers are gaining the confidence to grow these nutritious, climate‑smart crops, potentially planting up to 400 hectares and harvesting as much as 650 tonnes each year. Innovative GIS tools and digital advisory services, introduced with FAO and EBRD support, further help farmers manage land and water sustainably. These efforts form part of broader joint initiatives, such as the Agrifood Climate and Environmental Sustainability initiative (ACES) and the Agrifood Nexus Programme, that are strengthening climate resilience and sustainable agrifood development across the country.
