Türkiye’s Pine Honey earns protected status – and global attention

Thick, dark and rich in minerals, Türkiye’s pine honey, known as Türk Çam Balı, has recently earned national protection through a geographic indication (GI), recognizing its unique origin and quality. Unlike flower honey, pine honey gets its distinctive woody flavor from bees collecting honeydew from Marchalina hellenica insects on pine trees. Produced mainly along Türkiye’s coastal regions, this honey is now officially celebrated for its authenticity.

The GI was made possible through collaboration between the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and Türkiye’s pine honey industry, including beekeepers, scientists and government officials. This GI represents even more than a label – it’s a promise to the consumer of tradition, quality and sustainability. For Yunus Manav, President of the National Pine Honey Association, the GI is a milestone that protects local know-how and inspires future generations.

With hopes of EU-level recognition, Türkiye’s pine honey is poised to reach premium markets, boosting rural livelihoods and preserving biodiversity – one sweet spoonful at a time.
