More than 40 representatives from agribusinesses, financial institutions and development organizations gathered in Almaty, Kazakhstan, last week to explore how innovative financing can accelerate the transition to a more resilient and sustainable agrifood sector in the country.
Organized by the EBRD and OECD under the Water-Energy-Land Use Nexus Programme, the workshop spotlighted findings from Kazakhstan’s Agrifood Nexus Profile, which identifies critical pressures on land, water and energy resources that could shape the future of agricultural growth.
As one of the region’s agricultural giants, Kazakhstan boasts 205 million hectares of agricultural land and exports worth over USD 7 billion annually. Yet participants heard how improving resource efficiency, restoring degraded land and strengthening climate resilience will be essential to unlocking the sector’s long-term potential.
The event showcased a range of practical solutions, from conservation agriculture and sustainable pasture management to precision farming, efficient irrigation and digital technologies. Discussions focused on investments that can boost productivity while reducing pressure on natural resources.
The programme supports countries and businesses in identifying investments that generate multiple environmental and economic benefits while enhancing long-term competitiveness.
By bringing together public and private sector stakeholders, the workshop highlighted a shared ambition to transform Kazakhstan’s natural resource challenges into opportunities for sustainable growth and enhanced regional competitiveness, as well as stronger food systems.
The workshop forms part of the EBRD-OECD-FAO collaboration under the Water-Energy-Land Use Nexus Programme, which supported by the Government of Germany through its International Climate Initiative. The programme supports countries and businesses in identifying investments that generate multiple environmental and economic benefits while enhancing long-term competitiveness.
