From port to silo: Building smarter grain storage systems in Jordan

Jordan is strengthening its grain storage capacity as part of broader efforts to enhance food security and resilience in the face of supply chain disruptions and volatile global commodity markets.

From 19 to 21 October 2026, the EBRD and FAO brought together public and private sector stakeholders in Jordan for a national training programme on modern grain storage management. Delivered under the EBRD-FAO Food Security Package for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean (SEMED) region, the initiative focused on grain condition monitoring, digital storage tools, pest management and phytosanitary treatments to help reduce losses, preserve grain quality and strengthen strategic reserves.

The training equipped participants with practical skills to identify storage risks, apply modern technologies and improve grain preservation across Jordan’s storage infrastructure. As a country that imports most of its wheat, Jordan relies on effective storage systems to safeguard supplies and withstand external shocks. The programme also supports wider regional efforts to build more efficient, digitally enabled and resilient grain storage systems, with lessons from Jordan expected to inform similar activities across the SEMED region, including a programme in Tunisia.

Through their partnership, the EBRD and FAO are supporting countries to reduce food losses, improve efficiency and strengthen long-term food security.
