The latest episode of EBRD’s Nature Unheard podcast, Farming from Space with NASA, explores how satellite technology is transforming agriculture and food security. Featuring Dr. Inbal Becker-Reshef, Program Director of NASA Harvest, the discussion dives into how Earth observation helps farmers adapt to climate change, monitor crop yields in conflict zones like Ukraine, and make agrifood systems more resilient.
NASA Harvest, NASA’s global food security and agriculture program, works with partners including FAO and EBRD to integrate satellite-based approaches into official agricultural statistics. In 2024, the consortium helped modernize Ukraine’s crop area estimation methodology, overcoming disruptions to traditional field surveys caused by war.
Beyond monitoring, NASA Harvest is piloting remote sensing for verifying sustainable farming practices – a proof of concept funded under the FAO/EBRD ACES initiative that could shape climate action and sustainability reporting worldwide.
