Wednesday, 30 April 2025 – Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
The EBRD’s event held in Ulaanbaatar brought together more than 100 leaders from Mongolia’s private sector and financial institutions to explore how the country’s agri-food system can become more resilient and sustainable in the face of intensifying environmental challenges. Against a backdrop of climate pressures ranging from extreme weather to land degradation, the event provided a platform to exchange ideas, share international best practices and discuss the role of innovation, finance, and policy in enabling green transformation across the agri-food value chain.
Key private sector players had converging views on the challenges they face:
- Companies understand that there is a need to change business models due to pressures of climate change. This challenge also represents a business driver: through climate action and new risk management approaches companies can be more competitive and more profitable.
- The private sector identified the need for more technological innovation, new business models and a focus on quality as a way to address these challenges.
- It is important to do this together, consolidating the goals of both public and private players in the market to create synergies.
- The finance sector is ready to support climate action, but also to innovate and produce more tailored instruments as required by the local market.
The EBRD expressed readiness to support these efforts, whether by innovating on financial instruments, facilitating dialogue with the public sector, or supporting an enabling environment via new infrastructure, technologies and standards. The EBRD’s ambition is to scale up successful initiatives and pilots, make private sector efforts systemic, and connect them to other successful players in international markets.
