Building value together: One year of Turkish Pine Honey GI

With World Bee Day upon us, we are reminded of the vital role pollinators play in food systems and livelihoods. Turkish Pine Honey (Türk Çam Balı) offers a timely example of how origin-linked honey products can be protected and nurtured. One year on from its national Geographical Indication (GI) registration, the focus has shifted to turning this recognition into lasting value across the sector.

Granted in July 2025, the GI was obtained with the technical support of the EBRD and FAO, who worked alongside Türkiye’s pine honey stakeholders – including beekeepers, processors, exporters, government officials and scientists – to define a clear code of practice and support the application through technical guidance and training.

Since then, the GI has become a shared framework that brings stakeholders together around common standards of quality, authenticity and trust. Collaboration across producers, packagers and processors has strengthened, ensuring that the unique characteristics and reputation of Turkish Pine Honey are upheld.

Over the past year, the Turkish Pine Honey Association has demonstrated strong engagement, with its general assembly in December 2025 marking the election of a new administration and reinforcing collective commitment across the sector.

The GI is now guiding decision-making across the value chain, helping to align efforts, promote best practices and support long-term value creation. It reflects a shared dedication to preserving the distinct identity of Turkish Pine Honey while enhancing its recognition in the market.
