Serbia strengthens national expertise in carbon accounting for agrifood systems

A training course on strategic carbon accounting was held in Belgrade, Serbia, on 13-14 May 2025, aimed at equipping experts and businesses with tools to measure and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the agrifood sector. Organized by FAO and the EBRD, the training is part of a broader initiative to help Serbia and Uzbekistan develop climate-smart agrifood systems under their Nationally-Determined Contributions (NDCs).

Around 35 participants from government, academia and the private sector learned about carbon accounting methods, FAO’s NDC Expert Tool (NEXT) and investment strategies for low-carbon food systems. The EBRD also presented on the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its implications for Serbian exporters.

The event highlighted the importance of accurate GHG measurement in driving climate action and investment. Further trainings will be held in Niš, Novi Sad and Belgrade to expand national capacity in digital carbon assessment tools.
